Saddle Blankets

Saddle blankets are made annually. They begin with the wool of the beautiful and rugged Icelandic sheep of Washington State. I collect the best Icelandic wool the region has to offer, wash it and then send it to a small, custom mill in West Texas. They process the washed wool into core spun yarn using natural jute as a core that the wool wraps around. This gives the yarn durability of the jute while having the softness, loft, and beauty of the wool on the outside of the yarn. They weave the pads with antique looms modified to be run pneumatically which results in an exceptionally dense saddle blanket. Every years batch is unique, every single pad is unique.

Saddle Blankets are about 1/2 inch thick and 34” x 36”
They are bound on the edges using a high strength glue- this ensures the durability of the edge but the area is stiffer than the rest of the pad. I just store my pad under my saddle on the rack and it keeps the bound edge laying with the shape of the horse and saddle. I like to use my saddle blanket on top of a thick, pressed-wool pad for long days packing in the mountains.
